Maria Amalia Vaz de Carvalho, Lisbon conversations and other writings (1884-1889)
Lisbon conversations and other writings (1884-1889) by Maria Amalia Vaz de Carvalho is the first volume of Collection The Women of O Paiz, which will contain the results of the research project “It is necessary to talk about the absent. Female chroniclers in the nineteenth-century press: Research in archives”, coordinated by Alexandro Paixão (Unicamp), Ana Cláudia Suriani da Silva (UCL) and Tania Regina de Luca (Unesp). The project had the financial support of Unicamp (BAS Grant), Unesp (PIBIC Grant) and University College London. It has just been contemplated in the CNPq Universal Call for Proposals (18/2021) for consolidated groups, with no forecast for the release of funds.
The project aims to systematically locate the collaboration of the writers Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho (1847-1921), Maria Benedita Câmara Bormann (pseudonym Délia, 1853-1895), Emília Moncorvo Bandeira de Melo (pseudonym Carmen Dolores, 1852–1910) and Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934) in the press of Rio de Janeiro during the period of the so-called Belle Époque. The research is based on the digital collection of periodicals available in the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library, of the National Library Foundation. The digital editions aim to reevaluate the female presence in the press at the end of the 19th century, in order to contribute to giving visibility and building new narratives about female voices, which are still largely silenced.
The first volume Lisbon conversations and other writings (1884-1889) brings together the 98 chronicles of the Portuguese writer Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho published in the father between 1884-1889, which deal with issues of women's education, the role of women in society, adultery, divorce, the political situation, literary production, editorial launches, exhibitions and theatrical premieres, and philosophical issues of the time, such as determinism and pessimism. The volume contains an introduction signed by the organizers and a name index.
