I Meeting “Joel Martins Library of FE/Unicamp: Memories of the Library – Rescuing History and Recognizing Legacies”

The Faculty of Education Library held the meeting in order to rescue the library's memory.

On April 30, 2025, the FE Library held the 1st Meeting “ Joel Martins Library of FE/Unicamp: Memories of the Library – Rescuing History and Recognizing Legacies ” to recover the memory of the library through dialogue among peers who participated in the early days of the Faculty of Education and the Joel Martins Library, in order to reconstruct the timeline of the library in the context of the history of FE.

Clockwise: Ana Lúcia (professor and coordinator of the library committee); Ana Villanueva (architect who designed the library project); José Camilo (retired professor and coordinator of the library committee in the 1980s and early 1990s); Arlete (library director from 1972 to 1994); Gildenir (library director from 1995 to 2013); Simone (library coordinator from 2015 to the present); Ana Inês Fini (retired FE professor); and Rosemary (library supervisor). Present at this meeting were: Librarian Arlete, retired director of the library, to receive a tribute in recognition of her contribution to the implementation, development, and management of the library until the early 1990s; Professor Maria Inês Fini , retired from the Faculty of Education, who participated in the creation and development of the curriculum and course plans of the Faculty of Education. Professor Maria Inês Fini presented a report on Joel Martins, whose name was chosen in 1994 to name the Library of the Faculty of Education, in a posthumous tribute. Architect Ana Villanueva provided a narrative about the conception of the library project, in harmonious contrast with the projection of the central building of the Faculty of Education. From the perspective of technology, art, and architectural elements, inspired by Spanish, Roman, and Arabic constructions, the result was a distinctive hexagonal shape, considering the building's acoustics. The intention was to provide the reader with a special place for introspection, where reading, production, and knowledge building take place surrounded by the nature present in the library's internal garden and the songs of the birds that visit throughout the day. Librarian Gildenir , director of the library from 1995 to 2013, shared his story and his leading role in the FE library, acting as a mediator in the dialogue between professors Ezequiel and José Camilo. Due to Professor Ezequiel's absence, a new dynamic was proposed, involving the reading of a document shared by Professor Ezequiel, who over the years developed a great partnership with the Library, coordinating it and developing projects focused on reading. Professor José Camilo recounted his participation in the creation and development of the library, especially in the development of periodical collections, inspired by models from foreign university libraries, considering the impacts of digital information sources on the preservation of printed collections, demonstrating his commitment and concern for issues concerning the future of university libraries and the education of their readers. Directors Oscar and Márcio of the SBU (Unicamp Library System) also attended and honored our meeting with their presence.

Our expectation is that new meetings will take place, whose programs will always be guided by the Joel Martins Library Commission in dialogues with teachers, staff and researchers from the Faculty of Education, who worked or work in the library and who contributed or contribute to its development, in the direction of the purposes of the FE throughout its history and its projections for the future.
