Amid the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus (SARS-COV-2), society has had to readapt its social dynamics to comply with health measures and prevent contagion by the new virus. The ICT-FE sector was no different and, since the beginning of the pandemic, the sector has adopted a series of measures to make physical spaces safer and offer the necessary technical support in the remote context.
Health protocols in physical spaces
Due to the need to avoid crowds, TIC-FE adopted measures to maintain the minimum necessary distance. To this end, it reduced the number of computers — from 42 to 33 — in the laboratory rooms so that social distancing was guaranteed between people; divided the service room into two to avoid physical proximity and waiting in the hallway; adopted signage informing about precautions against the virus and made alcohol gel available at various points for sanitization.
MonLab: with developed to monitor the occupancy of the Computer Lab
Given concerns about the number of users in the computer lab, the team developed software capable of monitoring in real time the number of computers being used at any given moment, so that users can avoid the space when it is highly occupied. The program is connected to the 33 computers located in the lab and can check when one is being used, with an update interval of approximately 2 minutes. The occupancy level can be viewed on the FE website ( https://www.fe.unicamp.br/lab-informatica/ ) or in the physical spaces of the faculty, with the interface being transmitted live on televisions located at the entrance and in Annex 1.
Software for calculating students per classroom
Classrooms have a high potential for contamination due to the large number of students in the same space. Considering this, the TIC-FE team developed software that calculates the number of students that can be in a classroom while respecting social distancing guidelines. The system works by providing the width and depth of a room, adjusting the space reserved for students and teachers, and considering social distancing. It then provides the maximum permitted number of students, along with a graph showing the seating arrangements. Currently, all classrooms in the Faculty of Education and COTIL are pre-configured, which facilitates the calculation. Any UNICAMP unit can request the incorporation of their respective classroom dimensions for the calculation. It is worth noting that this action is part of the university's plan for resuming in-person activities, as outlined in the Covid-19 Guide.
Data migration from network storage to cloud
With the suspension of in-person activities at the university, remote return became an alternative for the continuity of the institution's academic activities. However, some resources were only available on the internal network, which made it impossible to access them. As a result, the team made efforts to transfer data to the cloud, making them accessible again and thus allowing the college's activities to continue.
